Collage Portraits from Parkside Intermediate School
Parkside Intermediate School is a public junior-high school serving approximately six hundred seventh- and eighth-grade students in the San Bruno Park School District. The student body reflects the diverse ethnic and socio-economic population of San Bruno, California. The staff at Parkside works diligently to create an equitable environment that is respectful of individual students and their backgrounds in order to maximize the learning potential of each student. The leadership at Parkside believes a balanced educational foundation in a safe environment allows youth to become successful and independent members of the community.
The process for creating this project consisted of each student learning how to draw realistically by utilizing Betty Edwards' drawing-instruction book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Once students portrayed themselves realistically, many multiple copies were made of each drawing in different sizes. Students cut out and arranged these drawings into a collage format. Other materials such as paint, oil pastels, transparencies, wire, and fabric were incorporated to enhance the background and complete the work.
San Francisco Airport Museums has presented an ongoing exhibition of children's art at the San Francisco International Airport since 1980. The children's art program was suspended during airport construction in 1998 and resumed in 2000.
Children's art fosters and promotes interaction between the diverse communities in the Bay Area and the San Francisco International Airport. This program provides San Francisco schools and other community youth organizations that have children's art program the opportunity to exhibit two-dimensional art on paper.
Bay Area schools and nonprofit organizations are welcome to exhibit artwork. The two gallery spaces are located at Baggage Claim level of Terminal One, Concourses A and C.
